Stone is a time enduring element. It has been around since the beginning of time. Many of the structures built by man throughout history were made of stone. Most of these structures are still standing, saying that you might want to consider that once your stone is laid it will be there for a long time.

Here is a list of key elements to help you recognize quality stonework and pick a quality stonemason.So that once your stonemason is chosen and your stone is laid you and others can enjoy and appreciate it for years to come.

• Look at a stonemasons work before you hire and
  compare to that of others.Do not look at $price$

  only.

  Drystack stone

• Stone should fit stone. That means there should be

  no gaps or holes. Every stone should fit tight

  against one another.

   

• No joint should travel vertically for more than two

stones before another stone breaks the joint.

 

• Absolutley no mortar should show between the

stones .(mortar should be raked out before the

work has dryed).

 

• Superior stonework should have a flowing look

to it and should be appealing to look at.

 

• Stonework should look as though it has

structural integrity so that if it had no mortar

behind it, it would still stand. Work should be

somewhat level and not look as though it has

just been thrown together.

 

Mortared Stone

 

• Stone should fit next to each other with small

  consistent joints.

 

• Mortar joints should be no larger than finger

width.

 

• Poor stonework will have some stone touching

each other. While other stone will have large

quantities of mortar in the joints.

 

• No joint should travel vertically for more than two

stones before another stone breaks the joint.

 

• Superior stonework should have a flowing look

  to it and should be appealing to look at.
